I attended the Texas Association of Journalism Educators this weekend in San Antonio, TX. Sheryl Floyd, the journalism teacher, and myself took 13 students from Pflugerville High School. Students entered competitions that showcased their writing and photography skills. Several group and individual awards were given and we left with a smile. It was yet another successful year!
Along with attending sessions that help enhance our knowledge of journalism and photography, we got the chance to listen and learn from a Pullitzer Prize winning photojournalist. Melanie Burford is a photographer for the Dallas Morning News and, along with a team of eight, won the Pullitzer for their work on the aftermath of Katrina. Her insight and emotional testimonies about her work left us all with a sense of wonder and appreciation. Not only did she talk about her work in New Orleans, but also her work with a local family near Dallas that continues to struggle with everyday life and all it throws at us. NOBODY in our group checked the time the entire time she spoke. We did now want her to stop. She showed us emotion and her incredible talent/ compassion for photojournalism.
The above website was shown and given to us to view. It is not her work, but it showcases the wonders of how people capture such wonder and emotion in just one photograph. She is truly an inspiration. Just by checking out the above site, you will see what our students are working towards. They want to capture the world and the emotion behind it. Today started off really wonderful thanks to Melanie Burford.
